Cataract and its Treatment

By: justin kenedy

A cataract is a change in the clarity of the natural lens inside the eye that gradually degrades visual quality. The lens plays a crucial role in focusing unimpeded light on the retina at the back of the eye. A significant cataract formation blocks and distorts light passing through the lens, causing visual symptoms and complaints. Cataract development is usually an age-related process because of protein loss in the lens. Other causes of cataract include eye surgery, eye inflammation, congenital cataract, exposure to excessive ultraviolet light, diabetes, smoking, and the use of certain medications like steroids, statins and phenothiazines.

Depletion or loss of vision in the initial stages of cataract is rare. However, there are warning signs as cataract progresses, including blurred vision, sensitivity to bright light, difficulty seeing at night, trouble identifying colors, and headache brought on by eye strain.

If you do not treat it in time, it causes blindness. Surgical treatment can however cure it in time. Most of the people over 60 do suffer from some clouding of the lens. But you can prevent them or treat them by following the simple home remedies.

Treatment:

1. Triphala (Three fruits) is a combination which has been recommended for the eyes in the ancient Ayurvedic texts. Triphala consists of Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and Behada (Terminalia bellerica). Triphala can be used in a decoction form to wash the eyes on a regular basis, and can also be used as eye drops. Triphala-Ghrut is recommended for oral intake on a long term basis to improve the vision in the eyes, cure night blindness and prevent other diseases of the eyes.

2. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR can assist in preventing and controlling cataract when mixed with honey in water and consumed with each meal.

3. CARROTS are a great source of Vitamin A, and are are -- as folklore suggests -- highly beneficial for the eyes. Eating raw carrots and/ or drinking a glass or two of raw carrot juice each day helps keep cataracts away.

4. Take beta-carotene and Vitamin E: Research has shown that increasing the beta-carotene and Vitamin E intake offers some protection against cataract. Have more of orange and yellow vegetables like carrots, squash and sweet potatoes for beta-carotene and almonds, fortified cereals, peanut butter and sun flower seeds for Vitamin E.

5. Babul (Acacia arabica) Babul can treat conjunctivitis. A paste of the babul leaves must be applied on the eyes before going to sleep at night. It will lessen the itchiness, wateriness and the redness of the sore eyes.

6. Medicines called 'Rasayanas', These medicines include Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Samudrashosh (Argyreia speciosa), Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta), Amalaki, Haritaki, Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata), Aparaajita (Clitoria ternatea), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), Punarnava, Mudgaparni (Phaseolus trilobus), Mashparni (Teramnus labialis) and Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris). These medicines prevent atherosclerosis and thus ensure a good supply of blood to all the parts of the body.
