A Nike dunk is fitting for young conquerors.

By: ann pan

Young men are hot-blooded in their pursuit to conquer, be it the academics, sports, entertainment, science, engineering, business, and warfare. History is full of these young men who not without fear but with so much passion and courage took challenges with eyes wide open. They embraced their fate, dreams, and choices with so much fervor that have forever placed their mark on human destiny. In their time, these young conquerors where fueled with internal flame that burned unceasingly up to their last breath. They wore the best of the clothing of their days and these were best suited for what they were and what they did. In their time though, they did not have a Nike dunk, which could have had made their travels and travails a lot easier.

A pair of these excellent Nike dunks could have been fit for Alexander the Great. He came close to conquering the civilized states of his days; and, maybe if he was wearing a pair of Nike dunk he could have conquered the whole world, civilized or not. This great man led his first troops when he was just an eighteen-year-old lad. When his father, King Phillip II of the Macedon nation, he became king. Before he reached the age of thirty, he overpowered the strong Persians and founded the famous and beloved city of Cleopatra- Alexandria. He did all these as he rode his favorite horse, Bucephalus. Yet unlike today’s youth, he did not have the luxury of Nike dunks.

Madiba, or as the world know him as Nelson Mandela, would have loved so much to have worn a Nike dunk to protect his feet from the overwhelming heat of the streets he trudged in the name of liberty and freedom from apartheid. It would have been a comfort for him to wear while imprisoned for twenty-seven years in the name of dismantling racism in South Africa. For sure, in both cases he would have opted not to accept any offer of such not because of dislike for the Nike dunks but a matter of principle to share in the poverty of his people. At an early age he was full of indignation against the wrong doings and abuses against his people just because of their color. When he won his Nobel Prize together with F.W. de Klerk in 1993 he was well applauded. It would have been a lot of fun though for the readers if in his autobiography titled Long Walk to Freedom he has an anecdote about a Nike dunk.

In the 1990s, basketball was dominated by a towering man who wore a jersey bearing the number 23. At a very young age, he conquered the hard court with his perfectly precise and graceful dunks. He led his team six times in winning a championship with deadly defense and attack skills. He was king, emperor, and despot of the hard court. He won for five times the NBA’s MVP awards. He is said to be the most powerful and skillful player that basketball ever had. He is quite fortunate though because he had worn Nike dunks and in fact some Nike dunks were named after him. He is no other else than Michael Jordan.
